INFORMATION FOR
PROSPECTIVE TUTORS

What are Basic Literacy and English as a Second language?

LVM serves two kinds of students. Adults who need help in learning to read and write are called Basic Literacy (BL) students. Foreign-born adults who want to improve their ability to understand and speak the English language are called English as a Second Language (ESL) students. LVM offers volunteers who wish to become tutors a combined training program that enables them to tutor both BL and ESL students.

Is it necessary to have some knowledge of the student's native language to be a successful ESL tutor?

Definitely not. The purpose of ESL instruction is to help our students develop proficiency in understanding and speaking English. Tutoring is conducted entirely in English so that students can acquire the conversational skills needed to take part in everyday life, to find employment, and to obtain citizenship.

What educational background must a tutor have?

A tutor must be at least 18 years old and have a high school diploma. Of course, many tutors have additional education. You do not need prior teaching experience.

What kind of training does LVM provide?

LVM provides a comprehensive participatory training totaling 15 hours of instruction. Classes are offered in the libraries of Middlesex county in the daytime, evening or on Saturdays.

Are there assignments and homework?

Yes. Preparation is required for each session. There are reading and writing assignments to reinforce each lesson.

Are any tests given?

Yes. Tutors complete their training by taking an open book test, which reviews the teaching techniques presented during the training. Completion of the test is a requirement for tutor certification.

After the training is completed, what kind of commitment must I make as a tutor?

Volunteers agree to a minimum commitment of one year of tutoring within Middlesex County. Tutoring is conducted for two hours once each week at a public library that is mutually convenient for you and your student.

Will help be available if I have problems while working with my student?

Definitely! Frequent consultations are provided to all tutors in the LVM program. Our professional staff has extensive experience in teaching BL and ESL to adult learners. Whenever you need help, our staff will assist you with lesson planning, selection of teaching materials, and problem solving. LVM also sponsors continuing education seminars and tutor support group meetings throughout the year which will enhance your skills.

Where will I find instructional texts, reading materials, and suitable exercises for my lessons?

LVM has provided each of the 24 public libraries in Middlesex County with a comprehensive collection of materials for BL and ESL 'instruction.

Is there any record keeping required?

Yes. Each tutor must submit a monthly report, providing LVM with the number of hours tutored.
